  16. <p>Detroit keeps calm after a black motorist is killed by police
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Even without a videotape, the blood and the brain matter that
  19. stained a Detroit street provided a brutal picture, evoking
  20. memories of the infamous Rodney King beating. But unlike L.A.,
  21. Detroit has remained calm as local police, the U.S. Justice
  22. Department and the FBI investigate the killing of Malice Green
  23. by police on Nov. 5. Green was stopped by two white cops, who
  24. then allegedly beat him with flashlights while other cops, one
  25. black and four white, watched or participated. Police said
  26. Green had parked near a suspected crack cocaine house.

  28. <p>    With the fires of L.A. and of Detroit's 1967 riots still
  29. burning in their memories, Detroit officials reacted swiftly,
  30. suspending seven officers, some of whom a county prosecutor says
  31. will face criminal charges. So far, the beating has inspired not
  32. rage but reflection and muted anger. On Tuesday some 300 people
  33. attended a prayer vigil, and on Thursday more than 1,500 came
  34. to Green's funeral.
